Summer Evening

Though not a conscious choice, I have relatively few night scenes. This painting, with its limited palette andtreatment of light, has made me interested in doing more now.
This piece was a special commission, and I did quite a few concept sketches before arriving at the final idea.

I like your style, very sweet and innocent. Though all your characters seem to be looking down (which give them no mouth or nose) — Except for the self-portrait. I love the Summer Evening, ….nice “rule of thirds” and the value changes within the shapes, like the hair, sky, or grass is very exciting to look at… with a nice glow at the horizon line and around the moon. The texture on the tree creates a great “point of interest”. Wow, now that I see the research sketches before the final piece … you really made some great decisions! Especially to simplify, which is scary to do. Fantastic work!
