As time went on, my fondness for mid-20th century design began to broaden and spread, encompassing the decades of the 40s and 30s and eventually back into the 20s too. I had barely begun, when I passed a really nice-looking Italian restaurant. A waiter was sitting in the front window, just like this. Immediately I liked the idea, and the play on words cinched it for me. I started work on it as soon as I got home from the museum. Like ‘The Date’, I gave this painting to friends as a housewarming gift.
