Young Man and Fish in a Rainstorm

I receive more comments about this piece than any other I have done. People have seemed to really like it. It has never ranked as one of my own personal favorites. It’s often said that an artist is no judge of his own work.

At 18″x24″, this was the largest piece I had done until that time.

Waking Up

This was one of my favorites when I painted it, and I’m still pretty fond of it today. It’s one of my few pieces that I have left unsigned, so that it can be viewed from any angle without being ‘wrong.’

Old Man, Young Man and Armadillo

Old Man, Young Man and ArmadilloThis is my first piece, painted in March of 2003, just before my 25th birthday. I can’t tell you what inspired the imagery. I just liked the idea of open space, the juxtaposition of young and old, and I’ve always liked armadillos. At the time I wore my hair just like the Young Man. Coincidence?

The theme of open fields is one that I return to very often, so I’m not surprised it figures into my first painting. I also immediately gravitated toward a heavy black outline. In my early pieces, I painted the outline. Later, I would begin inking the line with a Chartpak marker.
