Red

The sixth and final piece in the Dots Series. This was the first painting on which I used a black Chartpak marker to create the outline. I couldn’t do without it now. It offers a sure, precise, easily controlled line.

The Bohemians
This was the last painting on which I used a paintbrush to apply the black outlines.

Orange

The third in the Dots Series. I got the design for his outfit from poring over “All-American Ads of the 1960s” put out by Taschen. I have the entire series from 1900 through the 1980s and I would recommend them immediately to anyone interested in 20th Century American popular culture. They are indispensible to me.

Green

The second in the Dots Series. The young man in this painting has been accused of being me. I did have green hair once, way back when.

Island Boy

Back to the shore with this guy. This is my only painting, so far, with a clearly tropical setting.

Blue

I thought it would be fun to create a series of paintings, each devoted to one color, with people dressed in 1960’s era clothes. Around this time was when I started realizing that when you paint people without faces, you have to rely on hair and fashion to tell the audience who they are.

Around this time, I began to keep the preliminary sketches of my paintings. I don’t have them all, but will share the ones I do.

Young Man in Swimming Pool

Around the time I painted this, somewhere in the summer of 2003, I began to become fascinated with design of the mid 20th century. Atomic Age ranch style houses would begin showing up from this point onward.

Little Girl and Sandcastle

Little Girl and Sandcastle

This was my first painting to be set at the seashore, which is endlessly inspirational to me. I could live and die there and be perfectly happy. Though I would prefer to live.

This was the second painting I ever sold, and my first international sale.
