Grandma and Violets

My grandmother’s favorite color has always been violet and I knew that any painting for her should be saturated with it. I gave her this painting for Christmas 2003.

Grandma sketch

Originally, the setting was a fruit market. Those were all going to be purple eggplants. (Of which my grandmother is also fond.)

Girl in a Red Coat

I like something red in a snow scene. This painting drew some inspiration from ‘Dr. Zhivago.’

Originally, I intended for her to be in a rose garden. I decided though that I wanted the coat to be the only color in the painting.

Grandma and Butterflies

My grandmother kept butterflies all around her house; images, sculptures, mounted butterflies, engravings. I gave this painting to her for Christmas 2003.

Outside

This paining replaced ‘Young Man and Fish in Rainistorm’ as the largest I had done to that point, at 20″x30″. It was inspired in part by the Great Lawn in Central Park.

Daughter

I painted this as a gift to my cousin. His beautiful daughter was born August 1, 2003.

Red

The sixth and final piece in the Dots Series. This was the first painting on which I used a black Chartpak marker to create the outline. I couldn’t do without it now. It offers a sure, precise, easily controlled line.

The Bohemians
This was the last painting on which I used a paintbrush to apply the black outlines.
