Recent Doodles

At 30×40″, this is by far the largest piece I have ever done. It was a very different experience, working with so much space to fill. It made me concentrate a lot on placement and balance. It takes some getting used to. As of right now, I haven’t attempted anything approaching this size yet again - but intend to in the near future.

This boy made an earlier appearance in “Boy With A Balloon.”

As time went on, my fondness for mid-20th century design began to broaden and spread, encompassing the decades of the 40s and 30s and eventually back into the 20s too. It’s not uncommon now for me to move directly from a piece set in present day to one set in the atomic age of the 50s, then the the jazz age of the 20s and back. As stated earlier, the ‘All-American Ads’ books put out by Taschen GmbH help me immeasurably with hair and clothing style, architecture, furnishing trends and color schemes of the time.

This was another example of never knowing where or when you might be inspired. I was walking down the street thinking of what I might paint next. As I passed a fruit market, I saw one orange on the sidewalk…
